What Big Questions do you have?
With the current situation in the world, we are all facing completely new challenges and discovering new ways to live, love, share, work, learn and stay connected together. We are going through moments of uncertainty where no one has the perfect recipe for success, so we go through all the ups and downs, discovering and creating new ways of life.
Here at SOLE Colombia we are also reinventing ourselves, and rediscovering the way we learn together in the era of social distancing. StartSOLE gave an agile response to this global situation and began a few weeks ago to develop a great new tool for Virtual SOLEs. Together with StartSOLE and the worldwide SOLE community, we here in Colombia started an experiment to try this new way of doing SOLEs online, because even with the physical distance, we do not want to stop learning together and staying connected.
On March 27, thanks to the StartSOLE team we had the opportunity to create our first virtual SOLE, where we asked participants to share the Big Questions they had. 33 people connected from different parts of Colombia, from Chocó to the Caribbean Coast and Santander. We also had participants from Italy and Mexico connecting. Together with teachers, librarians, children, volunteers, the SOLE Colombia team and others curious to explore what a self-organized learning environment looks like, we started discovering the best way to interact, share our Big Questions, support each other and continue learning.
Despite this being a new situation for everyone, and having to face a new virtual dynamic, those of us who connected on the Virtual SOLE felt that the experience was like a small "party", where we could not only learn something new, but also have fun meeting others. The Big Question we chose was What will the world be like after the pandemic? We had different answers, from resolutions to wash our hands more often to thoughts on the importance that the multilaterals have in terms of planetary interconnectedness. Starting from our own questions and talking, we discovered that, despite the physical distance, it is possible to continue reinventing the way we do what we do.
We still have enormous challenges to solve, such as the possibility of connecting people living in remote communities that do not have constant access to the Internet, as well as improving and expanding the use of the platform. So we will continue to do Virtual SOLEs, test and invite diverse people to be part of this experiment and we will continue to work together to learn and solve the real-life Big Questions during and after the pandemic.
¿Qué Grandes Preguntas tienes?
Con la actual situación en el mundo, todos nos estamos enfrentando a retos completamente nuevos y estamos descubriendo día a día nuevas formas de convivir, alimentarnos, amar, compartir, trabajar, aprender, seguir conectados y todo lo que implica para cada uno vivir. Estamos pasando por momentos de incertidumbre donde ninguno tiene la receta perfecta para pasar este período, y así vamos, con todos los altibajos, descubriendo y creando juntos nuevas formas de vida.
Desde SOLE también estamos reinventando, y redescubriendo la manera en que aprendemos juntos en la era del distanciamiento social. StartSOLE, desde Estados Unidos, respondió ágilmente a esta situación mundial y empezó hace pocas semanas a desarrollar una nueva y gran herramienta para hacer SOLE remotamente.
En SOLE Colombia nos hemos unido con StartSOLE y SOLE alrededor del mundo, para comenzar un experimento y probar esta nueva forma de hacer SOLE Remoto (virtual), pues a pesar del distanciamiento físico, no queremos dejar de aprender juntos y de seguir conectados.
El pasado 27 de marzo el equipo de StartSOLE nos facilitó el uso del Virtual SOLE que han integrado a su plataforma y tuvimos el primer SOLE Remoto, donde pedimos a los participantes que nos compartieran las las Grandes Preguntas que tienen en este momento, lo que está más presente en el la mente de cada uno. Nos conectamos 33 personas de distintas partes de Colombia, desde el Chocó hasta la Costa Caribe y Santander. También tuvimos gente desde Italia y México conectándose. Juntos profes, bibliotecarios, niños, voluntarios, equipo SOLE Colombia y otras personas curiosas por entender lo que significa un ambiente de aprendizaje auto-organizado fuimos descubriendo la mejor manera de interactuar, compartir nuestras Grandes Preguntas, apoyarnos y seguir aprendiendo.
A pesar de ser una situación nueva para todos, y de tener que enfrentar una nueva dinámica virtual, quienes nos conectamos sentimos que este encuentro fue un “respiro”, una pequeña “fiesta”, en donde nos divertimos conociendo a otros. Investigamos la gran pregunta ¿Cómo será el mundo después de la pandemia? teniendo respuestas desde que nos lavaremos las manos muchos más hasta la importancia que las multilaterales tienen en términos de interconexión planetaria. Investigando a partir de nuestras propias preguntas, conversando descubrimos que, a pesar de la distancia física, sí es posible seguir reinventando la forma en que hacemos lo que hacemos.
Todavía tenemos enormes retos por resolver, como la posibilidad de conectar a personas viviendo en comunidades apartadas que no tienen acceso constante a Internet, como también mejorar y ampliar el uso de la plataforma. Así que seguiremos haciendo SOLE Remoto, probando e invitando a gente diversa a hacer parte de este experimento y seguiremos trabajando para que juntos podamos aprender y solucionar las Grandes Preguntas de la vida real durante y después de la pandemia.

Maryam Tertel is the Community and Granny Cloud Coordinator at SOLE Colombia. Maryam is a sociologist, educator, and pastry cook. Her work focuses on in-the-field interaction with communities and volunteers to mobilize bottom-up social change.
